A Blast From the Past (Just for Fun!)
Moving to a new house uprooted all the old photo albums that I treasure but always stored in the way back of our hall closet and didn’t look at nearly often enough. Now, until they find their new place in our new house, they are out on a bookshelf and I’ve found myself picking them up and randomly flipping through the old days.
Just for fun I thought I’d post a few of my favorite pictures involving food! Interesting how they all seem to be sugar or pizza-related. 🙂 I guess the camera tended to come out on birthdays and vacations and not so much at Sunday dinner or while eating an apple.
And so, in random order, I am pleased to share with you a peek into my childhood…
Helping Mom blow out her birthday candles. From across the table. Two little kids competing to extinguish the most the fastest. Good thing it’s just family. ‘We all have the same germs’ my mom used to say.
Always willing to help Mom in the kitchen when chocolate frosting was involved.
Orange soda was my favorite. (Grape was a close second.)
Very happy to be posing with a box of chocolate chip cookies.
Sorting and organizing my Halloween candy; a task taken with the utmost seriousness every year.
Life is definitely like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re going to get. Look closely and you’ll notice the dreaded coconut one with a tiny bite out of it by my shoe– my least favorite flavor. Funny how now I love coconut!
Pepperoni and mushrooms were our favorite choice for pizza toppings.
We must have convinced Mom it would be fun to eat our pb&j outside in winter. Any time the sun comes out in Rochester you must take advantage of the moment. And I never let a little snow stop me from roller skating!
Not sure where that huge lollypop came from. Perhaps it was a visit from Grandmom and Grandpop?
Making blueberry muffins. Is it just me or do see yourself in pictures from so long ago with zero recollection of doing what you were doing? Kind of interesting, kind of scary.
I think this is a bunny cake we are cutting. Must have been Easter.
It wasn’t purely sugar that I found photographic evidence of… here I am with my little sis eating scrambled eggs at Grandma’s.
And lobsters were something we leaned about while visiting Rhode Island…along with Del’s frozen lemonade and Dunkin’ Donuts.
As I close up my albums I’m transported back to the present moment and filled with gratitude and awe of all that’s happened as the days turned into years that so quickly evolved into decades. I think I will keep them out on the bookcase and easily accessible because they help put life into perspective and remind me of what is truly important. I think we all need reminders of this every now and then. I found this quote by C.S. Lewis (who wrote one of my favorite childhood books, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe) that sums up quite well how I feel:

Well, the photo documentation certainly shows a different story from what I (the mother) would have said . . . “We didn’t have many sweets and treats in the house when you were little.” ha ha ha
I agree! Like I said, the camera came out on special occasions. Hmmmm. It’s a good reminder that social media in general does not usually show someone’s day-to-day life, mainly just the highlights. Easy to forget this and feel bad believing everyone out there has a more exciting, happier life than you. Not true!
Wonderful photographs! So many! Now I want to go through mine.
Thank you! Hahaha, yes my dad worked at Kodak so there were always lots of pictures at my house!
